Today I am going back to the beginning of October for the Spitbank Fort wedding of Sophie and Peter. There can be few more unique wedding venues that Spitbank, which is located in the Solent was completed in 1878 to defend Portsmouth Harbour from attack. It has since been transformed into the most beautiful of venues and a wedding on the Fort is a day that no one will ever forget!
To say that the day of Sophie and Peter’s wedding was windy would be an understatement! On the boat over to the Fort the skies were black and the wind was blowing up large swells so the trip over with the lovely makeup artist Lorraine was hairy to say the least. Fortunately everyone arrived in one piece although the rain did keep us all indoors for much of the time. The autumnal weather did however produce a very dramatic sunset for a few short minutes.
The bridal suite on Spitbank fort is absolutely stunning and that is where Sophie and her bridesmaids got ready while Peter and the boys had the run of the fort and they even enjoyed a spot of (windy!) fishing. The Crows Nest on the fort where the ceremony takes place is a joy to photograph. The large windows provide lots of natural light whatever the weather is doing outside.
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed drinks in the Victory Bar while we took the group shots up in the Crows Nest before going in for dinner in the Officer’s Mess. This dining area is totally unique and offers a lovely intimate space for guests to enjoy the excellent food cooked by the Fort’s team of chefs. After dinner and speeches, guests were able to enjoy a guided tour of the Fort where they are told all about the history of the Fort and see the actual rooms where the soldiers ate, worked and slept during the wars.
A highlight of this wedding was the amazing band Milo Max who I have been lucky enough to work with on a number of occasions. As well and providing music as a duet during the drinks reception, they then set up their five piece band for the evening entertainment. Without fail they fill the dance floor for the evening and it was great to be working with them again! The party continued until midnight where those guests not staying on the Fort, myself and the band wished Sophie and Peter goodnight and headed back to Gunwharf Quays on the boat.
If you are planning a Spitbank Fort wedding and you would like to discuss your wedding photography please do get in touch, I would love to hear from you.
